Der große Myrrhengarten des bitteren Leidens [The Great Myrrh Garden of Bitter Suffering]

Winterberg: Steinbrener, [1911]. Full leather. In German, Gothic script. 12mo. 5.25"x3.25". Blind tooled morocco. Brass borders and working clasp (not original to this edition). Decorative endpapers. Steel engraved frontispiece. 640 pp.
Front hinge is broken and detached. Attractive brass edges and clasps added by a previous owner. Leather a bit scuffed. Previous owner's pen marks on front and rear free endpapers. Pp. 529-544 loose and laid in. Several items of German Catholic ephemera such as prayer cards are laid in.
This is a collection of theological writings by 17th-century ascetic Martin of Cochem. Judging by the ephemera which was found in this book and included in this sale, this copy was in regular use from publication until at least 1986. The brass borders and clasp were added at some point, presumably to prevent warping to covers. A fascinating if flawed copy. Fair. Item #1489
