Philadelphia: Archibald Bartram, 1805. First Edition. Leather bound. 8vo. Contemporary calf backed with a leather strip. Large folding map frontispiece. Unpaginated.
Boards and leather spine strip unglued from block. Toning and spotting throughout interior. Several contemporary plant leaves pressed in, which have caused discoloration. 2 closed tears at creases of folding map (which is in excellent condition). Previous owner's signature inside front cover and rear flyleaf.
This is a first edition of Joseph Scott's popular American gazetteer, one of the earliest such travel guides in the newly formed United States. The folding map is notably in excellent condition, and this is all in all a very well-preserved book, despite the unglued binding. (Howes S237; Sabin [unnumbered]). Good. Item #1704
