Notes on the Early Settlement of the North-western Territory

Cincinnati, OH: Derby, Bradley & Co., 1847. First Edition. Leather bound. Large 8vo. Contemporary calf. Frontispiece portrait of the author. 501 pp.
Binder's copy. Spine removed so both boards as well as first few leaves loose. Book is complete. Some ownership marks in front matter. Minor foxing throughout. Quite clean, excellent interior.
This is a rare first edition of Ohio Senator Burnet's important history of the Ohio River Valley (which was at the time considered "the Northwest") as well as a personal memoir. This book was published simultaneously in Cincinnati and New York, with the less common Cincinnati editions featuring a frontispiece portrait. "It remains one of the most important sources for the period covered." An attractive, complete copy despite poor binding. (Coyle p.89). (Howes B997; Sabin 9373; Coyle p. 89). Fair. Item #1773
