Presentation copy. Inscribed on 2nd free endpaper to Edith Maclure Love, who was a friend to Hubbard, Stephen Crane, and Walt Whitman. 3/4" scratch on front board and several other minor dents due to shelf wear. 1" damp stain on rear cloth. Tight and clean, an excellent copy. Includes a lock of hair.
This is a presentation copy of Elbert Hubbard's biography of naturalist Burroughs. Of particular note is the inscription to Mrs. Love and the lock of hair which is included. Love and Hubbard were longtime friends, and we have acquired a number of Roycroft items from Mrs. Love's estate. According to her grandson, this lock of hair was Elbert Hubbard's and was mailed to Mrs. Love inside the book. The hair is light brown and wavy, as was Hubbard's, but we are not able to DNA test the hair or verify the claim. Based on the other material in the estate, this bookseller believes it is likely that the hair is authentically Hubbard's, but there is no concrete proof. Regardless, this uncommon Roycrofters book with presentation signature is a highly collectible item in excellent condition. Very good. Item #1940
