Atlas of Antient Geography [Ancient]

Philadelphia: Carey, Lea, and Blanchard, 1838. Leather bound. 8vo. Three-quarter leather. Marbled boards. [8]pp. (front matter and advertisements); 20 hand-colored folding maps and 4 smaller maps split across 2 pages; [28]pp. (index).
All maps are clean and complete. Scuffing to leather and boards and a few surface chips. Several contemporary notes in pencil on front free endpaper. Minor foxing throughout. Two child's pencil drawings on blank map rectos and end matter, as well as some coordinates noted in pencil on recto of the final map. These marks are on blank pages only. Binding is tight and in excellent condition.
This is an uncommon early printing of bishop and historian Butler's maps of the ancient world. An excellent book with gorgeous, folding hand-colored maps. The doodles, depicting a young man and an adult woman in mid-19th century dress, are terribly charming as well. Very good. Item #2317
