Autobiography. John Stuart MILL.

Longmans, Green and Co., 1873. First Edition, First Printing. Cloth. This is a first printing (no errata leaf) of Mill's autobiography bound in green buckram with gilt lettering on spine. Corners are bumped, and buckram is loose at top of spine. Hinges are weak but binding is holding well. Owner's name and date (1873) as well as some other pen notes on flyleaf. Mill's utilitarian theories on economics and political theory were already well established by the time he wrote his memoir towards the end of his life. For a contemporary reader, this first printing would have been their first glimpse into the childhood and education of one of the most influential thinkers of the century. Good. Item #271
