Scribner's, 1914. Cloth. This set contains 6 volumes from the Scribner's 1914 23-volume illustrated collection of Smith's complete works. All are in very good condition save for some very minor scuffed edges and a bit of foxing. Tides of Barnegat has a small scratch on front cover. All are bound in green cloth with gilt lettering, gilt top edge, and a gilt decoration on cover.
Volumes included in this sale are: The Fortunes of Oliver Horn (1902, illustrated by Walter Appleton Clark); The Under Dog (1903, illustrated by the author); The Tides of Barnegat (1906, illustrated by George Wright); The Veiled Lady and Other Men and Women (1907, illustrated by the author); Peter, A Novel of Which He Is Not the Hero (1908, illustrated by A.I. Keller); and a pair of novels in one volume, Colonel Carter's Christmas (1903, illustrated by F.C. Yohn) & The Romance of an Old-Fashioned Gentleman (1907, illustrated by A.I. Keller)
Smith was an author, artist, and engineer, builder of the foundation of the Statue of Liberty and a descendant of Francis Hopkinson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. His novels were usually humorous satires of the American upper class. Very good. Item #320
