Harper and Brothers, 1882/1885. First Edition. Hardcover. Initials JMT written in ink inside both back covers. Both spines are cracked, but no pages are loose. Comes with a handwritten note found tucked into Farm Ballads: "Belonged to Andrew H. Shaw, my father. They were old when he bought them. Farm Ballads and City Ballads." As they belonged to the same owner and evidently have some history together, we prefer to sell these two companion volumes as a set.
Farm Ballads (1882, revised edition) and City Ballads (1886, first edition) are gorgeous hardcovers bound in green cloth with decorative gilt covers that still glitter and shine as if new. They are in remarkable condition for their age, very good despite the cracked spines and a prominent stain along the bottom edge of the first few pages of both volumes. They contain many original poems meant to evoke a common man's life in the farm or city, respectively, and dozens of unattributed full-page illustrations. These are two of the most visually striking books in our catalog. Very good. Item #53
