Meeting of Minds; The complete scripts, with illustrations, of the amazingly successful PBS-TV series.

Crown, 1978. First Edition. Cloth. Inscribed on flyleaf: "Best wishes, Steve Allen." This is a signed first edition (second printing) of Steve Allen's scripts for his PBS series, Meeting of Minds, in which historical figures played by actors met to discuss their lives, world events, and be interviewed by Allen. It was a brilliant television conceit that Allen originally conceived for The Steve Allen show in the 1950s, finally brought to fruition in the mid-1970s. AP columnist Peter Boyer called it "the best talk show on television, created by the person who invented the television talk show," and it went on to win an Emmy and Peabody for Allen's writing. Steve Allen was a comedy legend, best known as the original host of the Tonight Show, but Meeting of Minds also showed off his intellectual side. A true Renaissance man, Allen was also a musician and composer, an activist, and a high-profile advocate of scientific skepticism. This signed volume is a lovely item of memorabilia from one of the few people who can be considered both among the greatest American comedians and greatest public intellectuals. Very good / good.
