Golden Gate Popular Street Atlas; San Francisco - Marin - San Mateo - Santa Clara Counties

Thomas Bros Maps, 1974. Spiral bound. Some minor stains and scratches on cover. This is a rare 1974 atlas for San Francisco and the surrounding counties by the iconic Thomas Bros Map company. Maps are in color, and the book features many detailed indices and street guides. The Thomas Bros Map company was based in Oakland and Los Angeles from 1915 until its closure in 2009 after being purchased and shuttered by Rand McNally. The Thomas Guides experienced a boom in the 1990s, but few of their maps printed prior to that can be found for sale, due to the disposable quality of the paper among other factors. The maps in the Thomas Guides prior to the 1980s were drawn and compiled by draftsmen rather than cartographers, and included small, intentional errors ("Easter eggs") to protect their copyrights. Indeed, these maps have a very charming vintage, hand-drawn aesthetic, making this rare guidebook a fine addition to the library of a map collector or Bay Area history enthusiast. Very good.
