Presentation copy. This copy is inscribed by Wells "For Paul, with thanks." This copy also comes with a printed card laid in: "With compliments of the Trustees of The Newberry Library Chicago." "and J. Wells" is inscribed on the card additionally. The late James M. Wells was the legendary curator and head of acquisitions for the Newberry Library and custodian of the John M. Wing Foundation on the History of Printing. He held this position for 34 years until his retirement in 1984. His successor, and this book's recipient, was Curator Emeritus Paul Gehl, a historian and curator of great renown who held Wells' position until his retirement in 2016. This unique copy of Wells' gorgeous exhibition catalog celebrating the impact of the Encyclopaedia Britannica on the world of education also represents the passing of a torch from one world-class scholar to another.
