Archive of 1990s US Marine Corps Recruit Training Manuals and Ephemera [with hand-drawn cartoons and notes]
(Please note that the bookseller cataloging these items is not a veteran, nor is he particularly knowledgeable about the workings of the US military, so the significance of some items is likely to be lost on him.)
This is an archive of books and items related to the US Marine Corps which were issued to a trainee in 1993-94. All items are in Good-Fair condition. They have been used extensively and all contain the previous owner's notes, doodles, and hand-drawn cartoons. The items were issued at the USMC Recruit Depot in San Diego, CA and at Camp Pendleton, CA.
This is an interesting collection from what ended up being a short-lived military career. As of 2025, the former recruit works in the entertainment industry. His online profile states, under "Unique Traits,": "Joined the Marine Corps when I should have joined the Peace Corps."
The following items are included in this lot:
Recruit Training Regiment Student Handout. Printed and hand-written pages in 3-ring binder. This textbook contains the most personalization, with many pages of notes and drawings. This includes a handwritten page of slang translations he wanted to remember, such as "Buttkid" and "Pogey Bait." A letter to the recruit's mother is also bound in.
0311 Student Handout. United States Marine Corps School of Infantry. 8vo. Staple-bound wraps. A training manual with many illustrations. Previous owner decorated this book extensively in pen (including drawing the logo for alternative rock band 311 over the "0311" marker on cover).
Guidebook for Marines, 16th Revised Edition, July 1990. 8vo. Wraps. A paperback handbook with many illustrations and photographs. Significant wear to covers.
Basic Warrior Training WFTBN Field and Weapons Company. 8vo. Loose pages bound with string. A textbook and field manual with illustrations. Some pages have notes in pencil.
Miscellaneous items:
-Plastic camouflage pen pouch
