Thomas was a Marxist journalist who was active in the struggle for women's rights in the Caribbean, Jamaican independence, and global human rights. In 1988, she married Lord Anthony Gifford, a British barrister influential in the Jamaican independence movement. The previous owner of this book has helpfully noted on the half-title page that "Elean Thomas = Lady Gifford." Very good. Item #7177
