This is a scarce first edition of a significant volume on American exploration, containing the journals of William Henry Ashley and Jedediah Strong Smith, Missouri fur traders whose passage to the Pacific Northwest comprised a significant portion of the Oregon Trail. Ashley and Smith had been largely forgotten by historians until the publication of this book, which restored their names to the canon of great American explorers. (Howes D-21, Rader #1040, in Cowan, Jennewein #7, Zamorano 80-25). Good. Item #1591
