William Dean Howells, an American realist novelist, literary critic, playwright, and diplomat, widely referred to as "The Dean of American Letters," is distinguished for his editorial contributions to The Atlantic Monthly, along with his notable novels The Rise of Silas Lapham (1885) and A Traveler from Altruria (1894). In 1860, he visited Boston, Massachusetts, where he interacted with esteemed authors such as James T. Fields, James Russell Lowell, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. He formed significant personal connections with several eminent personalities, including Henry Adams, William James, Henry James, and Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.
William James was a leading thinker of the late 19th century, and one of the most influential philosophers of the United States. He is considered the "Father of American psychology."
